DIVERSE WAYS BY WHICH GOD SPEAKS 

(Part 2)

Hebrews 1:1-2

Encounters, dreams and visions are good and God uses them but they are not His best way of communicating with us. 


They are not 100% safe and must be checked with the Word of God. That we have visions, encounters and dreams from God does not mean we know God or know Him by His word, 1Samuel 3:7. 


One is chaff the other one is wheat, Jeremiah 23:28. Job said I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear but now mine eye seeth thee, Job 42:5. Talking of two different ways by which he has come to know God. 


Samuel had an encounter with God through vision but He didn't know God by His word, yet he was already an established prophet and God did not allow his words to fall to the ground, 1Samuel 3:19. 


But God appeared to Him once again and his word was revealed to him, I Samuel 3: 21. Until then He did not know God by his word, but only through visions and encounters, 1Samuel 3:3-7. 


Apostle Peter was relating his experience with Jesus while on earth, how they heard a voice and saw Jesus transfigured on the mount of transfiguration but he went on to say that even though they had these spectacular experiences there is something much more greater, A MORE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY, that is, THE WORD OF GOD. 


He went on to admonish us that we should take heed to it as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn and the day star arises in our hearts, 2Peter 1:19. 


That encounter solidified their conviction that Jesus was the Son of God but much more than that they knew Jesus by what prophecy(Isaiah 9) had said about Him first not just because of that encounter they had on the mount of transfiguration. 


Now, what does it mean to know the word of God? 


Does it mean that if I have a Bible verse to support every dream, vision, prophecy or encounter that I have, then it is from God? 


Knowing God goes beyond having intellectual knowledge of the word of God. The kind of knowing God from His word that we need is the kind described in Genesis 4:1, INTIMACY.  


Knowing God from His word is understanding the nature of God. Knowing what He can say and not say, what He can do and not do. It is having the revelational knowledge of the Word of God that God gives by His Spirit, Matthew 16:16-17. 


God still speaks through dreams, vision, encounters today e.t.c but they must be consistent with the nature of God as revealed in the scriptures. 


You can't dream or have vision that you falsified documents and say it is God showing you the way out of early retirement or financial struggle. 


It is not just consistent with the nature of God. God doesn't help people that way. Even if you have that dream ten times, morning afternoon and night, it is still not a godly solution, it could be God warning you against doing such. 


Another thing is always check with the Holy Spirit. Let the peace of God be your umpire in such things, Colossians 3:15. Do you have peace concerning that encounter, dream or vision or prophecy? 


A vision or encounter can be so good but afterwards you lost your peace, something just doesn't feel right about it. That is the Holy Spirit trying to put a check in your spirit. It is time to pray in the Holy Ghost. 


Another thing, is the dream or encounter or vision passing an information that is new or a confirmation of what you already know? 


Is it consistent with the way God speaks to you before? Is it consistent with God's dealings in your life? 


Some people are very prophetic in the  way God speaks to them while others rarely have dreams, visions, encounters. 


But there is one way God speaks that is common to  all, THE WORD OF GOD. It is better and safer to know God by His word than through spectacular spiritual experiences. 


By this I don't mean we should reject spiritual experiences that God gives us but we should now God by His word first and not go seeking spiritual experiences. 


Blessed are they that have not seen yet have believed, John 20:29. You must know God by His word and you must know how God speak to you


If you are born again, you have an unction in you and you know all things and that unction(Holy Spirit) teaches you all things, 1 John 2:20. 


Lastly check with other people that are more spiritual than you. In the midst of many counsellors there is safety, Proverbs 11:14. Samuel checked with Eli and kept ministering under his watch till he was able to discern the ways of God and know Him by His word.


In my next post by God's grace, I will continue the two other reasons why God give spectacular spiritual experiences.

CHANGE FOCUS One major winning strategy is to keep your focus on what God is doing and not on what God is yet to do.  The devil is very adept at making people focus their attention either on what he is doing in their lives or on what God is not doing for them  This is the reason for sadness and depression.
