THE LORD OUR SHERPHERD
Psalm 23
Is the LORD your sherpherd?
To answer this question correctly we need to define who a Sherpherd is.
Who is a Sherpherd?
A Sherpherd is one that has charge of a flock.
The primary responsibility of a sherpherd is the safety and welfare of the flock.
The shepherd grazes his animals, herding them to areas of good forage, and keeping a watchful eye out for poisonous plants.
The Bible calls this making the sheep to lie down in green pastures and leading beside the still waters, Psalm 23::2.
A Sherpherd leads while the sheep follows.
In the same way, Jesus our Great Shepherd leads while we follow and everytime we follow, He leads us to green pastures and still waters.
If we have been following correctly that is the result we will always get in the end.
It may not look like that in the beginning.
Imagine the sheep walking long distances in search of green pastures and sometimes without water for some time.
But because the sheep trust the Sherpherd as their protector and provider they keep on following.
Lack of trust is what makes a sheep to turn his own way and wander away from the path of safety and provision, Isaiah 53:6.
Another reason why a sheep turns away from the Sherpherd is his inability to hear the Sherpherd's voice.
So the first training for the sheep is knowing the Sherpherd's voice, John 10:27.
The voice of the Sherpherd is His Word for a Christian, John 1:1.
To know the Sherpherd you must know His Word. You must spend quality time in the Word.
What water is to life is what the Word of God is to a Christian.
The more authority the Word of God has over your life the more you will experience correct sherpherding.
We can't know the voice of the Sherpherd without the Holy Spirit because He is the one that reveals the word of God to us, Matthew 11:27.
Without the Holy Spirit the Word of God will just be letters without any power to save, heal, prosper and deliver, 2Corinthians 3:6, John 6:63.
Two things that I want us to take note of this morning:
First, let this truth be established in you, that following the Sherpherd will always make you lie down in green pastures.
The Holy Spirit is to our advantage and He always have our best interest at heart, John 16:7.
Many times the Holy Spirit would lead me to do something and the thank you I receive is the answer to what I have been asking God for.
I can say it most assuredly that if you follow the leading of the Sherpherd, He will cause you to lie down in green pastures.
It is a gradual process but you will soon find out that your wilderness has completely turned into green pastures.
Secondly, ask yourself have I been following the Sherpherd or have I turned my own way?
Isaiah 53:6 says, "All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned, everyone to his own way".
When you turn your own way, what you are doing is hewing for yourself, cistern that can hold no water, Jeremiah 2:13.
There is a way that seem right to man but the end thereof is destruction, Proverbs 14:12.
There is only one thing Jesus has called us to and it is a life of FOLLOWERSHIP.
That was how Jesus served the Father and that is how we too will serve the Father, John 12:49, 14:31, 5:30. A servant is not better than his master.
I love this scripture in John 12:26 so much and it perfectly describes what I am saying this morning. It says, "If any man serve me, let him follow me and where I am there shall also my servant be. If any man serve me, him will my father honour"
I want to serve Jesus and I want to be where He is. I don't want to be in Lagos and Jesus is in Akure.
He has shown me the way to do it. He said I should serve Him by following Him.
To cap it all, He said only those that serve Him this way will the Father honour.
I want the Father to honour me and my words, and my ministry so I follow as He leads.
When we follow Him, He makes us, we become exactly what He wants us to be.
PRAYER: Ask the Father to give you the grace diligently follow Him and not go astray and that the Holy Spirit should reveal God's Word to you.
ACTIVITY: Get a Bible plan and get into the Word of God. That is the only way to recognize the Sherpherd's voice.
SALVATION PRAYER
Anything short of you being born again and living a life of holiness and purity hurt Jesus so much. But you can make things right here and now by saying this simple prayer and mean it genuinely from your heart:
Lord Jesus I come to you today. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I cannot help myself. I repent of all my sins and I forsake them. Jesus, I invite you into my life, be my Lord, be my Saviour.
Wash me by your precious blood, forgive my sins and write my name in the book of life. From this day, I promise to follow you all the rest of my life. Help me Lord, in Jesus name, Amen. Congratulations you are now born again!
PEACE
